As you might expect at its price, the P1102w does not have a lot of fancy features. You basically get a small laser printer which produces good quality output fast. Its key benefit is the wireless networking, which has to be set-up using a USB connection (but this is easy). It can then be located anywhere and can be used by any computer on the network. When not in use it automatically goes into standby, in which state its energy consumption is virtually nil. When a print job is sent to it it wakes up very quickly and starts printing.

The HP LaserJet 1102w measures only 13.66 x 12.99 x 7.64 in and that is with the paper tray out (as in the picture). It therefore takes up much less space than most other printers and is ideal if you are short of space. This does unfortunately lead to its one disadvantage. There is no high capacity toner cartridge available for this printer and the standard cartridge will only last about 1600 pages. This means that the printer will become expensive to run if you do a lot of printing.

The pros and cons of the HP Laserjet P1102w can be summarized as follows:

HP Laserjet P1102wPros

  • Print Quality – This is very good
  • Speed -  Up to 19 pages per minute; first page out as fast as 8.5 seconds
  • Wireless Networking – Works well and set-up easy
  • Stand by – Auto standby is great, you can forget about the printer but it is ready when you want to print
  • Size – Small size is a major benefit if space is tight.

Cons

  • Lack of features – e.g. Auto duplexing. If you want to print non both sides of the paper you have to do this manually.
  • Running Costs – Low toner capacity means higher running costs.

If you are a heavy user then this printer is not for you. You will be better off paying more for a larger printer which takes high capacity toner cartridges and therefore minimizes running costs.

On the other hand the HP Laserjet P1102w is ideal  as a home printer where there are multiple users who are not heavy users. This is when its small size, print quality,  wireless networking and auto-standby combine make it an great buy.
