Should you be thinking about purchasing a new printer you might be wondering about the relative merits of a laser printer as opposed to an inkjet printer. To generalise we are able to say that laser printers create excellent text documents and decent images and do so quickly. With inkjet printers it is the otherway about, first-rate pictures and graphics but less impressive text and both produced slowly.

 To make this decision you need to consider;

Price – Laser printers are more expensive to buy, especially color lasers. As a result, if you print relatively small amounts and need color, an inkjet will be your best option.

Running costs – If your print volume is anything other than low ink cartridges will be a significant expense. Although laser toner cartridges are expensive they have a large capacity so, unless your print volumes are very low, a laser printer will cost less per page to run.

Printing volume – The greater the volume of printing you do the more cost effective a laser will be (as well as being quicker).

Type of printing – For pages of text the best option is a mono laser printer. It will produce high quality output at a reasonable price. For low volume personal use, including photos, then the best choice is an inkjet printer. If you print any volume of text, graphics or mixed documents then you should consider a color laser. Having said that you can always use a mono laser with an inkjet if you don't need color frequently.

Here are three mono lasers for consideration:

HP Laserjet P1102w – This is a very compact wireless mono laser printer, ideal for home use. It is easy to set-up and produces good quality documents at up to 19 pages per minute and it is available at a very attractive price. A disadvantage of its size is that the capacity of the toner cartridge is only 1,600 pages.

HP Laserjet 1320 series – This is an older printer which has been available since 2004. It has been described as a great “workhorse” office printer (mono). It can generate 10,000 pages per month at up to 22 per minute and will produce the first page in under 9 seconds. One key reason for its popularity is that it features double sided printing, although some issues with this have been reported with Windows7.

HP Laserjet P4014n – A more recent mono laser for office use which can output at 45 ppm. It has a high build quality and its text output is excellent. It is highly expandable in that there are lots of optional extras that enable the printer to meet future requirements.

For home use the P1102w is ideal as it is very small for a laser printer. On the other hand the P4014n is ideal for business use because you can buy the basic printer and add to it as your needs grow.

By Bobby Miller

If you think there is very little involved in taking photos or that there is completely no need for a photography beginner's guide, you have obviously never held a digital camera. Commercials would have you believe you can take wonderful pictures just by pointing and shooting. It's true that you can snap fairly good photographs simply by using your digital camera's built-in auto mode. If you go this route, though, you will be missing out on the many things your digital camera was made to do.

The good news is that you can learn to take better photos, and you can learn fast. You can sign up for photography class but most hobbyists and even would-be professionals find such classes expensive and time-consuming. The guides you find in the local library or bookstore may be helpful, but these guides are very rarely up-to-date or model-specific. In most cases, you will only end up confused.

If you really want the best value for your money and the best use of your time and learning curve, try a guide that is accessible online. It should be helpful and useful without being overwhelming. It shares the tips and tricks of professionals and insiders, and shows you how to take great photos even though you have never before held a digital camera! And, because this photography beginner's guide is accessible online, you do not have to wait for a long time to get the information you need. You can access it immediately!

Learning to take great photos is only the beginning. You can manipulate images using your camera, but you can also continue doing the same from your computer, once you have downloaded the photos. In a nutshell, digital photography is a fun and challenging hobby. you can even turn it into a full-time job if you ever become good enough!

By Joan Yankowitz

The digital age has brought a number of wonderful inventions, including the digital camera. However, there is a common misconception that digital cameras do all the work for you.

While it is true that digital cameras make it easier to take great pictures, there are still certain aspects of photography that you should bear in mind. This guide to digital photography will detail some of the most common mistakes made by amateur photographers.

Forgetting that the composition of a shot is important

If you're on vacation or spending quality time with the family, it is easy to become a little "snap happy" and take pictures of anything and everything that strikes you as interesting, unusual or amusing.

However, you will find the result largely disappointing; with too much unnecessary clutter around the edges of the shot and perhaps even vital parts of your subject missing.

Therefore, it is wise to take a few moments before taking the shot to ensure that everything you want in the frame is in the frame. In addition, bear in mind that your pictures will not just convey memories, but how you feel about a certain object, person or place.

Thinking that those special shots are just lucky

Often, amateur photographers believe that particularly dramatic, emotional or artistic shots are simply the result of being in the right place at the right time. However, luck alone will not suffice. In truth, the best photographs are taken when a little luck meets a lot of preparation.

In other words, it is a good idea to research the location or object that you wish to shoot. In addition, you may even have a clear image of the photograph you wish to take. In order to make the most of what circumstance or nature offers, you must spend a little time researching and preparing your shot.

Taking too few pictures

Given the first mistake listed above, you may think this a contradiction. However, when you have taken the time to find the right shot, it is a good idea to take several. Of course, how many pictures are too few, too many or just enough is a very individual concept. As a rule, it is wise to consider the following: have you covered all the angles you want to? If it is an action shot, have you taken pictures of every stage of the action? Have you experimented with your camera's settings?

Avoiding interaction with the subjects of portraits

Interacting with people, particularly those you do not know very well can be a daunting task. However, if you want to take really good portraits, it is important for your subject to feel comfortable. When traveling abroad, taking photographs of locals can be possible from a distance with the help of a powerful lens. However, you are likely to get much more candid and sympathetic shots if you are willing to communicate with your subjects.

Of course, these are just a few of the most common mistakes made by amateur photographers. This guide to digital photography will not only provide you with methods of creating better pictures, but also ensure that photography is more fun!

Comment by Phil: This article gives 5 very useful tips to help you improve your pictures. These are simple and once learnt you will do them without really thinking about it.

by James Fowler

In recent years digital cameras and camera phones have made photography more accessible than ever, but if you find that the ease of digital has not made the quality of your photography improve, observing these 5 simple tips will help lift the standard of your photography overnight.

Tip #1. Rotate 90 degrees! No, not you, the camera. Most amateur photographers hold their cameras in the standard, horizontal fashion, which means all their pictures end up in the standard, horizontal format. But if you are photographing a tall building, a single tree, or a small group of friends, for example, turning the camera so the picture format is vertical (or portrait format as it is known) can immediately improve the composition.

Tip #2. Split the screen into 3's. There is a basic rule of composition, used in all the visual arts, called the Rule of Thirds. If your camera allows you to overlay a grid in the viewfinder or on the screen, this can be a great aid to using the rule for quality composition, but even if you don't have this function simply imagine 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines evenly spaced and dividing the viewing screen into 9 'blocks'. Where the horizontal and vertical lines cross is one of the thirds. If you place the main point of the subject (perhaps a person's eyes, or a single tree on the horizon) at one of these intersections, it will immediately lift your composition. Another tip is to place the horizon on one of the horizontal lines, rather than having it smack bang through the middle of the picture. Give it a try, you'll be impressed.

Tip #3. Keep it clean. This sounds an obvious point, but do keep the front of the lens clean, but never remove dust from the lens using the end of your finger. This will simply leave an oily mark that will soften sharp detail in the photograph. Sometimes that's a pretty effect, but only when you want it.

Tip #4. Make the light interesting. A subject with little contrast between dark and light areas, or little colour, will be naturally flat, and this is made even worse when photographed under a dull sky. Try to make the lighting more interesting and you'll immediately lift a mediocre shot into something special. For example, if photographing a portrait, have the person stand side on to a bright window, and the side lighting will instantly make their features stand out (although they may not always welcome that!).

Tip #5. Watch out for weird growths! When photographing a scene, especially people, it is very easy to only concentrate on the immediate subject. But take a second to check what's in the background, so that people don't have lampposts sticking or similar out of their heads!

With digital, the biggest benefit is being able to review a photograph instantly, so if it is a memorable shot, take a second to check that you've followed all 5 tips above and you'll start to improve your photography instantly. And the good news is that after a while these considerations become more and more natural, and you soon have friends referring to you as a natural born photographer. Happy snapping! James Fowler is a creative copywriter specialising in subjects ranging from photographic art to audio books.

Comment by Phil: A look at colour balance and colour temperature, what they are and how they should be used in digital photography.

by Willis J. Watson

What is colour balance? In the context of colour, "balance" does not refer to harmony or equality, but neutrality. A scene that is colour balanced is one in which the illumi¬nating light offers all hues in equal proportion: in other words, the illumination is white and not tinted with colour. Thus, a scene can be full of blues or greens yet still be colour balanced, while another scene with a well-judged combination of secondary colours may look harmonious, but may not be colour balanced at all.

The aim of colour balancing is to produce an image that appears as if it were illuminated by white light, achieved by adjusting the white point. However, there are different standards for white light, and so there are different white points. For example, it would not look natural to correct an indoor scene lit by domestic lamps in order to make it look like daylight; rather, a warm-toned white point is called for instead.

However, in a scene containing brilliant colours, a cool-toned white point is more acceptable (giving colours like that from a bright Mediterranean sky). A colour balance that is slightly warmer than neutral is generally preferred by most viewers.

Colour temperature The colour temperature of light has, In fact, nothing to do with temperature as we traditionally think of it; rather, colour temperature is measured by correlating it to the colour changes undergone by an object as it is heated. Experience tells us that cooler objects, such as candles or domestic lights, produce a reddish light, whereas hotter objects, such as tungsten lamps, produce more of a blue/white light.

The colour temperature of light is measured in degrees Kelvin, and a white that is relatively yellow in colouration might be around 6,000 K, while a white that Is more blue in content might be, say, 9,500 K.

While colour slide film must be balanced to a specific white point, digital cameras can vary their white point dynamically, according to changing needs of the situation.

Comment by Phil: An interesting view on the camera phone compared to a dedicated digital camera. It will be no surprise that the writer finds several disadvantages, as small multi-function devices must have limitations, but these have to be balanced against convenience. Many people will want both devices.

Mobile phones rule the world today. People have become addicted to the amazing device, they seek for newer features on their cell phone each day. Producers beat their head to provide every demand of the customers. There is no doubt the charismatic device has changed our life style enabling us to keep in touch with our near and dear ones any time.Reaching out to business associates from any where is a cinch with the easy to carry device.

However, there are quite a few who feels some of the features offered by the device are just for name sake, cell phone camera is one of them! Mobile phones are incorporated with more and more features and functions each day. The cell phone has made its existence felt for quite some time now.

Nevertheless, all the features and functions offered on the cell phones are not up to standard. The camera mobile phones have been here for quite a while now. However many people feel they are only a puffed up feature of the product. Three reasons are mainly attributed for this judgement.

There are mobile phones that put forward image zoom. Photographers with basic knowledge are aware of the fact that use of digital zoom severs the picture to such a degree that it will become out of use. Even though, some cameras provide image zoom! It is better to buy a satisfactory yet not too expensive digital camera for the price.

Most of the mobile phone cameras are not provided with a flash. Even if the mobile phone with a camera is endowed with a 5 mega pixel it might not be having a flash! The strange hurdle puts off the efficiency of the camera. Flash is an indispensable feature of a camera. Flash adds effects and life to pictures.

Even in circumstances where you have enough light you might require a flash to instil class to your photographs. The absence of flash in a camera reduces the usage ratio of the camera around fifty percent. More and more amateur and professional photographers are opting for digital cameras instead of cameras on mobile phones. The fall of prices in digital cameras and their high picture quality has given rise to the phenomenon.

The affordable starter level cameras are equipped with more features and high quality compared to a cell phone camera. There are digital cameras which suit every pocket. Due to the above mentioned factors cell phones with camera are losing their charisma in the electronic bazaar.

Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the fact that there are a few producers who are producing mobile phones with superior options like 15 Mega pixel camera with actual zoom. Their number is considerably low.

When one intends to explore the world of digital photography and possibly make it a lucrative career in the future, the first thing to be accomplished is to understand the basics of photography. You must able have a reliable compact digital camera in your possession that would prove to be your most valuable tool when you are out shooting or capturing pictures. Here we have some basic photography tips that would hopefully guide you well in your bid to become a successful photographer in the future:

1) Once you own a camera, go through its manual, and understand exactly what every switch, button, control and item on the menu does to your photographs! Even if you are unable to master everything, ensure that you know how to turn on the flash when necessary, are able to switch between different environment settings and know how to zoom in and out.

2) Start taking pictures by switching your camera's mode to automatic setting at first, and once you are more familiar with the settings and features of your camera, you should be able to alter it in accordance to your needs and preferences

3) Set the camera to its highest resolution whenever you can so that you would get better quality pictures that would prove to be more convenient to alter digitally when you are processing them. If you do not have much memory to play with, it is advisable to obtain a bigger memory card as photos with higher resolutions tend to be bigger in terms of image size

4) Be constantly on the go, and ensure that you carry your camera everywhere you go! Many people tend to miss good memorable shots because they tend to stay indoors a lot, and many forget to bring their cameras when they are out traveling.

5) Avoid red-eye distraction if possible, this can be accomplished by switching on your red-eye reduction feature (most digital cameras come with this options nowadays)

6) Use a tripod whenever you can, as it would reduce the chances of your picture blurring due to shaking hands or other distractions – if possible, get yourself a carbon-made tripod

7) And remember, practice makes perfect, thus work on your photography skills whenever you are able to!

Once you fully understand all these basic tips, you would be able to take high-quality photographs, regardless of whether they are family photographs, portrait photographs, or even scenery shots! Good luck!
